Natural Healing Efficiency and the Pith of Five Arirang Songs

Abstract
The objective of this study was to understand the morphological changes of mouth or body when singing Bon Arirang, Haeju Arirang, Milyang Arirang, Gangwondo Arirang, and Jindo Arirang which are the 5 representative Arirang of Korea and their therapeutic effects. Bon Arirang is a simple and beautiful song to enhance the concentration and adjust oneself neatly calming down in Joongmori rhythm of Semachi Jangdan (3/4 beats). The circulation of Qi energy is initiated from tightening the belly to come down to the mouth and lower part of abdomen and then go up to the neck. Haeju Arirang is poetic in Semachi Jangdan. The Qi energy circulates from abdomen to anus, tailbone, mouth, and then back to the lower part of abdomen. It has therapeutic effects on the whole body. Milyang Arirang is lively and brave in Jeongja Sorijo (cheerful song) and Semachi Jangdan. It has therapeutic effects on the whole body through the neck, nasal cavity, and lower part of abdomen. Gangwondo Arirang has romantic mood and plain feeling of rural areas in Ulmori Jangdan. Its therapeutic effects include making the facial expression beautiful, strengthening neck and digestive system, activating thyroids, and improving the whole body. Qi energy circulates from face to neck, breast, abdomen, and lower part of abdomen. Jindo Arirang has heavy and respectful feelings. Its therapeutic effects include excreting wastes from the body from deep and long breathing from the lower part of abdomen. Qi energy circulates for a hundred times. It has therapeutic effects on the whole body. In conclusion, traditional Arirang is considered to have treatment effects of both mind and body by catalytic effects inducing various physical and mental changes with circulation of Qi energy throughout the body. It has important meaning as a natural therapy.
